Artist statement for End of the Wall studios, Wallsend

I am a multi-disciplinary artist; my practice includes film making, drawing, painting, and writing. My most recent large-scale project was a collaboration with Arts & Heritage as part of their Blue Sky Museums campaign, where I proposed a site-specific sound piece made in response to Shandy Hall in North Yorkshire. This was given a People’s Choice award, chosen by a public vote.

Non-linear approaches to storytelling inspire my work, notably the authors Laurence Sterne, Kurt Vonnegut, and Jorge Luis Borges; where the shape of their stories provide opportunities for exploration and visualisation.

I aim to run workshops centred around the creative writing process, where the texts will act as a basis for artworks, which will then be curated and exhibited to the public. This act of translation and interpretation will blur the distinction between art forms, making them more accessible to members of the community, empowering people to express themselves in diverse and meaningful ways.

Using connections I have made while working at Newcastle College University Centre, I also hope to use the studio to offer short- term experimental residencies for final year or recently graduated Art students, so that they are able to access a space to develop, realise, and exhibit work in a professional setting. This will build their portfolios and aid in their transition to becoming a practicing artist, ultimately widening participation in the rich and vibrant art community of the city.
