Unstuck Clock (2018)

Sound installation at the Mining Institute, Newcastle upon Tyne

'I asked myself about the present: how wide it was, how much was mine to keep...'

Kurt Vonnegut, Slaughterhouse 5

Can we keep hold of the present? It disappears as soon as it arrives.

My work toys with the malleability of the moment. How we experience time passing is entirely subjective, our sense of duration is separate to the systematic measurement of time performed by clocks or watches. These instruments only measure time in relation to themselves, and this mechanical interpretation is often at odds with our human experience of it: where seconds, minutes and hours are not rigid entities, but can be shaped by our location, circumstances, and emotions.
